Starting off this season of American Horror Story My Roanoke Nightmare we are introduced to a family who had just moved out from Los Angeies to our own North Carolina. The season starts as a reenactment described by the actual victims of the events that ensued but is portrayed by actors. This began as soon as the newlyweds, Mark and Shelby, moved into their new home and began to experience strange paranormal happenings. These began with the disappearance of Monet’s daughter Flora, Mark’s sister (played by Angela Bassett, Saniyya Sidney and Cuba Goodings Jr.). As the season progresses the survivors began to re-experience the trauma of reliving the events during their stay in the house. Mid-way through the season however all of the original members of the series are invited back to the house on the same nights of their paranormal activity.
This season also attempts to be viewed in multiple platforms. As in the first few episodes are reenactments, however halfway through the narrative changes as the original “season” of the show they air becomes popular. So much so that the managers for the series “My Roanoke Nightmare” gets a spin-off season, “My Roanoke Nightmare: Three Days in Hell.” All of a sudden the narrative of the show is changed and the filming is done by cameras in the world. This includes filming cameras, mounted surveillance cameras, phone cameras and others hidden around that give different angles of the horror which ensues in this portion of the show.
The narrative continues the story of the survivors, as well as the original cast members who played them in “My Roanoke Nightmare” past the events of their stay as well as the release and growth of popularity of the first season. After being reintroduced all the original survivors and cast member are invited back to spend three nights in the house on the nights of the blood moon. Everyone resentfully agrees to return, such as Matt and Shelby who have had a falling out in their marriage since their first stay in the house. This falling out led Shelby to spend a weekend with Matt’s actor in the first season, Dominic Banks, whom was also invited to the show as to spark drama between the two for the nights to come.
This season as a whole constantly does a good job of keeping your interest as well as keeping you on the edge of your seat while still hiding under covers with its amount of jump scares.
