With October just starting that means Halloween is right around the corner. So exactly what all is there to do around here for Halloween? Lots of people around here don’t go anywhere or do anything for Halloween, but what they don’t realize is that there is a lot more to do around here then just go trick or treating or go to the Ghost Train; not that those things aren’t fun, but there are so many more options.
If you love a good scare, go to Hillside Horror in Wilkesboro, which I recently went to and totally loved! It’s a haunted house, but when you get out of the the house you’re stuck in a haunted corn maze full of dead ends and terrifying creatures! It doesn’t stop there though. After you finally get out of the maze you have to go through a haunted old western styled outdoor area that is just as scary as the maze. I would highly recommend Hillside Horror to anyone who wants to get really freaked out! Another spooky event is Lake Hickory Haunts, which includes six haunted attractions around the eerie lake. This disturbingly scary experience was ranked #1 in the Carolinas for providing people with “the scare and entertainment of a lifetime.” If you would rather go hiking on a haunted trail a great one for you could be West Jefferson’s Haunted trail. For those of you who are looking for a more interactive experience, there is an attraction called Undead Paintball in Hickory where you go on a hay ride and get to shoot paintball guns at real people dressed as zombies. All I can say about that is the zombies better get paid a lot!
Let’s say that horror just isn’t your thing though. There are still plenty of other festive options for you! Harvest Farm Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Valle Crucis is a great place for you to go and enjoy the season with an adventurous hunt for puzzle pieces in the corn maze or a pretty walk through the pumpkin patch. There is also the Ashe County corn maze in Crumpler, Foothills corn maze in Morganton, and Johnny Wilson Farm Pumpkin Patch in Granite Falls that you could visit. If you like history you could go and do the hayride at the Historic Orchards at Alta Pass and enjoy a 45 minute hayride and story about “the most historic two miles of the whole Blue Ridge Parkway” which talks about the revolutionary war and the history of our mountains.
Maybe you just aren’t into the whole Halloween thing at all. There are a bunch of concerts coming up these next few months that might give you something to go do with friends during the upcoming holiday season. If you’re into country music then Carrie Underwood, Easton Corbin, and The Swon Brothers are performing in Charlotte at the Time Warner Cable Arena on October 23th and Alan Jackson will be singing at the PNC arena on the 27th. If you like rock music then Failure will be performing at Greene Street Live on the 14th of October and STYX will be performing the day after at Harrah's Cherokee Resort Event Center. If you’re into pop music, Andy Grammer will be performing on October 22nd at The Fillmore studio. The Head and The Heart, Chris Young, Jeff Dunham, Peter Hook and The Light, Animal Collective, Bob Dylan, Andra Day, and 3 Doors Down are some more popular bands that are also performing either this month or next month.
