A Taste of Empty Bowls

On March 19th, Watauga High School held it’s annual Empty Bowls event. The entry fee was 20 dollars per person, this would admit you one ticket, a bowl of your choice, and food from any of the tables. This food was made and donated by local restaurants and businesses in the area. These businesses had also let the school use serving trays as well as dishes to hold the food in. They were then after returned to their proper businesses.
The event begined at the entrance where you pay for your ticket and select your bowl from one of two long tables littered with beautiful bowls made by locals from the area. The event was from 4:30 pm to 6 pm but started around 12 for those who wanted to volunteer. After getting your bowl, you could walk around exploring the silent auction for other pieces of pottery also made by local artisans. These tables lead to a row of tables on the other end of the cafeteria. Here, you could find a range of delicious soups or chili as well as local bread donated by our own Stick Boy Bakery and a table full of deserts.
The work was done by volunteers many of which were students and staff who worked serving food, selling tickets, and washing dishes. I arrived at Empty Bowls a little late. After picking out my bowl and trying some of the delicious chili, I was offered the chance to volunteer. I took it and started by washing dishes and serving utensils. After the dishes were clean, packed, and ready to be returned to their proper businesses. Ted Drum and I walked around taking down and clearing tables which felt good to do after seeing all of the work that was put into setting this event up.
I have included some photos taken by our journalism adviser, Ms.Zirkle.
