As a new artist you are most likely facing a lot of confusion on where to start, what to draw, or even how you should go about drawing it. Your confusion is 100% normal as the world of art is very overwhelming. Unlike other hobbies art doesn’t have one direction to travel in, rather you can move in any direction you want! This guide is meant to explain only one artistic process, only one style of art. The medium used in this guide is digital art, specifically, a program called AutoDesk Sketchbook Pro.
Step 1: Step one in creating any form of art is becoming inspired, visualising what you want to create. As a newer artist you may want to look at someone else’s art, a picture, a physical object until you get better visualising your drawing in your head. In my case I imagined a set of three mysterious potions, one a vibrant blue, one warm red, and the last a toxic green
Step 2: Once you have at least some idea of what you want to draw go ahead and sketch some lines, just a few rough ideas to help solidify your mental image.
Step 3: Step three is to build on your originally rough outlines with some grey tones in order to add a little bit of third dimension to your art. The shading will really help a lot in the future. This is also a good time to go ahead and save your project(assuming you are working digitally). It is a good practice to keep saving your art because computers aren’t perfect and do crash.
Step 4: Step four is simple, change your background color to a light grey. Having a background that isn’t white works wonders helping to show light highlights and reflectiveness. The grey backdrop also assists in making colors feel more vibrant.
Step 5: Go ahead and splash some color onto your piece, the shading from step 3 will help immensely if you're new to color blending/shading.
Step 6: This step is a refinement step, erase stray marks and shape your art subjects’ edges. blend your previously rough color shading and add a few lighter highlights to areas where light would be hitting. In the example the light will
be hitting the extruding parts of the potion’s glass. Removing the black outlines is also a good rule of thumb.
Step 7: Add a new layer of black covering your entire piece. lower the opacity so that the black layer has effectively darkened the previously vibrant color shading.
Step 8: Re-highlight areas of reflection. Add more detail to your drawing while you're at it. Do this in a new layer. start heavily considering where exactly you want the light to be coming from and how it will affect the coloring of your subject.
Step 9: Step 9 is to take your layer in your previous step and decrease the opacity, once again lowing the vibrancy to the colors. the purpose behind multiple layers of color is to create texture and depth in your subject.
Step 10: Add some texture marks to your subject. The type of texture marks entirely depend on the subject, In my case I added chips and a few scratches to make the glass appear to be worn and battered.
Step 11: Step 11 isn’t really a step but more of a suggestion, using your drawing software mirror your piece vertically or horizontally to gain another perspective on your art. This drastically changes your viewpoint and allows you to see the mistakes that you weren't able to see otherwise.
Step 12: Continue to add detail and shading layer by layer until you have a texture you're pleased with. Step 13: Darken your background once more and clean up the borders.
Step 14: Take an airbrush tool and go around your subject in order to create an ethereal glow. adjust the opacity on the glow until you like it.
Step 15: The last step is to position your subjects in a visually appealing in a way that consumes the entire canvas.
